What is included in a strategic planning session

A strategic planning session brings your board and senior leaders together to decide where the organisation is heading and what to do first. It is a working session, not a presentation. You make the decisions. We keep the conversation focused and on time.

Every organisation is different, so we design the agenda with you. Most planning days work through the same questions. Where is the organisation now? What are its strengths, risks and opportunities? Where does it want to be? Which few priorities will get it there? By the end, each priority has an owner, a measure and a date for review.

What you get:

  • Pre-session discovery with your chair, board or executive: what you want to decide, who needs to be in the room and what to look at first
  • The facilitated planning session, run on the day or days agreed
  • A written strategic plan that records what the group decided
  • A 12 month action plan with priorities, owners, measures and review points
  • A short debrief after the session to agree next steps

The written plan and action plan are in plain language, so your board, leaders and team can all use them.

Your 12 month strategic plan

The outcome of the session is a 12 month plan. It turns the decisions from the day into a short list of priorities. For each one it names who is responsible, how you will know it is working and when your board or executive will check progress.

Review points through the year let you adjust as funding, regulation or demand change. A plan like this gives your board something to govern against. Your leaders know what to focus on, and your team knows what is expected.

What a strategic planning day costs

Strategic planning days start from $3,500 ex GST per day. Strategic planning projects are quoted as a fixed fee or by the day, depending on the job.

The number of days, or the fixed fee, depends on the size and scope of your organisation, and is agreed after the free 30-minute initial consultation. The size and complexity of the organisation, the number of sessions, the preparation and the written plan all shape it.

This from price is for strategic planning days only. Other advisory work with JTS Empower Services is usually quoted hourly after the free 30-minute initial consultation.

How it is delivered

We deliver strategic planning sessions face to face in Brisbane and across Queensland and Australia, with travel to be agreed. We can also run them remotely by video. Remote delivery suits teams spread across regional Queensland and other states.

We confirm the format with you during the initial consultation, based on who needs to be in the room.

Who it suits

We work with boards, chairs, CEOs and executive teams in the human services sector. Our sessions suit organisations that want to reset direction after a change, or give their board and leaders one shared plan for the year ahead. Common reasons to plan are a new board or CEO, a change in funding or regulation, growth in services, or a plan that has run its course.

We work with four kinds of organisation:
